Penangites from near and afar are invited to celebrate Chap Goh Meh at MYPENANG Reunion on 27 & 28 February 2010 starting daily from 5.00pm until late at The Esplanade and Padang Kota Lama in Penang Heritage City.

“The 15th day Chap Goh Meh Chinese New Year tradition of throwing mandarin oranges “Tim Kam” into the sea began at the Esplanade and is one of Penang’s long-time traditions. It gives me great pleasure to welcome all visitors over the long weekend to Penang to celebrate Chap Goh Meh Penang style!” said State EXCO YB Danny Law Heng Kiang.

Organised jointly by Go International Group and the Penang State Tourism Development and Culture together with co-organiser MYFM 101.8, an exhilarating two-day Chap Goh Meh celebration titled “MYPENANG Chinese New Year Reunion Celebration” is among the line-up of activities throughout the Chinese New Year Reunion Celebration here in Penang! The event, themed ‘For the love of Penang, come home’ will be held at the birthplace of the “Tim Kam” tradition – The Esplanade.
Visitors will be in for a treat; from international celebrity showcase concert, fashion and food bazaar, traditional lion dances, a variety show featuring magicians, singers and dancers plus Lucky Prize Giveaways every 30 minutes!

The mission of this event together with the traditional Penang Chap Goh Meh celebration also held  annually at the Esplanade is to position Penang in the hearts and minds of the public and the world as the nostalgic place for reunion celebrations. It can be a REUNION celebration of tradition or just a gathering for all friends and families. Chap Goh Meh is the night where Chinese families would gather together for the last dinner of the Chinese New Year celebration but it also marks the Beginning of a new Lunar Year ahead. Most importantly to illustrate Penang as a Heritage City in modern times, MY PENANG REUNION shall also showcase Taiwanese celebrities including the popular rock duo Y2J, Cindy Wu (a protégé to the famed Jay Chou) and Genie a.k.a. Wendy Guo. In addition, MYFM DJs and local celebrities including Danell Lee, Thomas & Jack, Astro Star Quest’s Alvin, Juztin Lan Kah Fai and Ah Yoke as well as the Astro Battleground Dancers “Katoon Network” shall perform on the 27 FEB.

Ms. Jasmine Low, Managing Director of Go International Group Sdn. Bhd. says, “My PENANG REUNION is an opportunity for all Penangites living in or out of Penang to show their love for their hometown. We want to create history with this event. This event is to show what Penangites are capable of. To host a international standard tourism event with a local twist and also to invite as many of their friends to come and experience Chinese New Year like no other. So let’s show the country and the world what Penangites are at heart.  Like a true Penangite will say, You can take me out of Penang but you will never take Penang out of me.”

On Chap Goh Meh 28 February, MYPENANG REUNION gets more action packed when REDFM DJ’s feature a Schooldays Reunion Outdoor Party where music of the 80’s & 90’s brings back schooldays memories.  On the actual Chap Goh Meh, fireworks and lion dance is MUST-SEE but all visitors should also watch out for a record-breaking surprise performance on that night as well.”

MYPENANG REUNION AngPow Bonanza is already on sale at selected locations. At only RM28, the AngPow is your entry pass to the two-day festival and incorporates complimentary passes to the concerts, outdoor party, lucky prize giveaway voucher and a free drink. Corporate rates are also available for bulk purchases and MY PENANG CNY REUNION ang-pows makes good gifts from companies to their employees as “Hoi Kong Lai See”, which is ceremonially a gesture for employers to give AngPows to their employees on the first day of work after the Chinese New Year holidays.

“This is a good opportunity for MNCs and companies in Penang to involve their employees in the festival as part of their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) for the local community,” added YB Danny Law.

Another interesting highlight of MY PENANG CNY REUNION is the Night-Bazaar, which shall have 88 vendors selling merchandise from handicrafts to the latest women’s fashion, accessories and food!
